These are the key people of the Civil War. They played a big role on the outcome and what is our nation today.

Abraham Lincoln

He was born on February 12, 1809. He was the 16th President of the United states and was in charge of the Union military for the entire Civil War. He signed the Emancipation Proclimation which set all slaves free forever. He dedicated some of  the Gettysburg battlefeild to military soldiers. He was assasinated on Good Friday April 15, 1865 by a drunk actor at the theature Lincoln attended to see a comedy that night. The actor thought he was helping the South but he was actually doing quite the opposite.

Ulysses S. Grant

He was born on April 27, 1822. He was a Union general in the Civil War. He captured the Confederate general at Vicksberg and defeated Lee's army. This ended the war and he then became the 18th President of the now United States.

Robert E. Lee

He was a Confederate army soldier in the Civil War. He was the most successful of the Confederate forces during the Civil War. He eventually commanded all Confederate armies as "General-in-Chief". He used his experience and knowledge that brought him to win very many battles against outnumbering forces.

Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson

Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson was a General in the Civil War. The military looked at and kept his papers and images on and of the Civil War.
